The council will raid its parking fund ($15,000) and the Beaufort Street landscaping fund ($23,000) to meet the shortfall.
Council staff began to sweat when the artist advised that just the concrete formwork for the sign would cost $120,000, much higher than the $95,000 estimate for the entire artwork.
The council has since compromised on a lower-cost design, including a reduced-width stage and painting the concrete instead of using coloured concrete.
Councillors were to vote on approving the extra funding at Tuesday’s council meeting (after the Voice’s early Easter deadline).
