‘Blacks banned’ poster outrage

POSTERS reading “blacks banned” are springing up around North Perth.

Halinka Lamparksi spotted one at Robertson Park and alerted Vincent city council. Rangers swooped and removed about eight.

While the shock headline indicates racist intent, the smaller text suggests the signs may have been slapped up by Aboriginal activists unhappy with police moving them out of the area’s parks.

“Aboriginal people are banned from coming here,” the fine print states.

“No Indigenous people are allowed to be on their traditional grounds of Perth in this area.

“If they do, they get a move on notice from the police and a fine of $200.

The posters follow revelations that last year 40 per cent of WA’s move-on notices were issued to Aborigines, who represent about four per cent of the population.

Linda Black, the president of the WA Criminal Lawyers’ Association complained on ABC Radio in December the laws were being misused. They’d supposedly been introduced by the former Labor government to control disruptions outside pubs and clubs, not turf Aborigines out of the CBD.

Sigh.

This is a case of the minority spoiling it for the majority, but move on notices don’t get issued for no good reason.
It’s the “being pissed in public, yelling at randoms and then getting into an argument with the first copper that comes along” that lands you a move on notice.

And while you certainly cannot generalise an entire group for the behaviour of a few individuals, it would be entirely naive to suggest that this wasn’t brought on by themselves. 40% of move on notices being issued to a group that represents 4% of the population, which ties in to the disproportionately larger amount of indigenous males being found guilty of crimes for their population size.

It’s clear that the current system is completely failing these people.

  I have no idea what the second part of your comment is going on about. But to the first part: What a load of CRAP Aaron ^^ And I sigh a Lot louder and longer at your ignorance. You obviously have NO idea what your talking about. The problem is the harrassment by Police ASSUMING that all Aboriginal people are there drunk and carrying on, when that is a tiny minority of Aboriginal people in Perth. It is humiliating, embarrassing and completely unjust the way Police move in on Aboriginal People minding their own business sitting in a park, or along a street bench like everyone else there, only to be issued a move on notice. Then when they object at how rude and unfair that is, they’re told they’re causing a nuisance and land themselves in lock up. I have seen this time and time again. Until it happens to someone you know or love, you really have no idea how racist and horrible that feels. Your friends that go to work just like everyone else, don’t get the right to sit down with us in a Public place and thats just a fact. I’ve even seen a drunk white person, sitting next to a sober Aboriginal person, and the Aboriginal person is moved on. Apon my objection, I and several people with me were issued warnings and threatened with being locked up. Racism is very much alive and well in Perth and the move on notice has been a horrific injustice for Aboriginal people who have been meeting in these areas long before it was inhabited by boat people. So I think these laws need to be removed.

  just my two cents: actually move on orders DO get issued for no good reason.. I lived in northbridge and, while completely sober and walking home, police came up to me and accused me of smashing a bottle (never happened) -then I got a move on order and was told to leave northbridge. I explained that I lived within 20m of where I was standing and pointed at my house behind them. The cop’s response? “mate you have ten seconds to turn around and get the f*ck out of northbridge”

  And we have no reason at all to believe that the structures are set up to disenfranchise the indigenous people of the land, The structures weren’t set up by the same people, not to generalise as you said, who committed genocide against the indigenous people and stole their land? Sure, we believe that 40% of the move on notices issued to 4% of the population was “brought on by themselves,” and that such a small percentage of the population makes up something like 25% of the prison population because they are more prone to crime, not because the original criminals released onto the indigenous population set up structures to further control and subjugate the original people.

There’s no doubt it’s a complex issue and Aborigines are over-represented in our justice system because of all the issues surrounding conquest and dispossession, but it’s hard to believe these figures represent a true picture of how much disturbance they cause. As a society we are also at risk of simply pushing people further into the fringes and letting the issues fester until something truly horrid confronts us. if you’re convinced move on notices don’t get issued without good reason, perhaps this video (admittedly from the United States) might be food for thought: http://www.upworthy.com/meet-the-17-year-old-who-blew-the-lid-off-racial-profiling-with-his-ipod

Obviously, as with other media, this is a different poster to what has been put on Facebook. Where an unknown person has placed several notices in the Burswood area, stating that aboriginal people should be banned from that area, bring back the permits for them to enter the area, and placing a blue line,(whatever that means. I have seen this on Facebook and someone mentioned they would send it to this site. As far as I can tell the wider community, white Australian, still continue to manipulate the true story making aboriginal people look like the ungrateful blacks who won’t go away or give up on their rights and being given the respect to be recognised as the First people of this land.. We will always be misrepresented, our own constitution still has aboriginal people recognised as Flora and Fauna to this day. Go to a Muslim country you don’t respect them or their culture you will feel the brunt of their law.. Stop being so ignorant!! Please

I lived in Perth for one year. The racism I witnessed there was astounding, towards all non-white races but specifically aborigines. And the racism came from the full spectrum of whites, young, old, male or female. I was even told by an elderly lady to avoid a part of a park because there were heaps of aborigines there (they were sitting under a tree, eating lunch). Lo and behold a white bloke walks into the park and starts beating up on an old man. What a disgraceful, backwards place.

Disgusted as an Aboriginal Elder in South Australia and as an ex military service person and my daughter and son in law both served in the HMAS Anzac both out of Perth find that as traditional people that the people involved should have some sort of punishment for the outrage, signed Mrs Helen Chester, a Ngarrendjeri Elder
