Art deco delight

IT’S always a pleasure to visit Menora, with its leafy streets and stately older homes, and arriving at 14 Melrose Crescent was no exception.

“What a cute little house,” I blurted out to the owner, trying to retract the word “little” as this two-storey home actually has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and sits on a whopping 951sqm lot.

But cute it certainly is, from the lovely portico and french leadlight door, to the tasteful rear addition, which features a massive cathedral window overlooking the garden and kidney-shaped swimming pool.

This 1930s abode is packed with art deco delights, including gloriously decorative ceilings, a multitude of leadlight doors and windows, jarrah door and windows frames, art deco built-in-wardrobes and linen/storage cupboards.

There’s certainly nothing “small” about the sweeping formal lounge, which has a huge street facing window, an open fire and a classic chandelier.

Similarly fitted-out, except for the 21st century chandelier, is the formal dining room next door.

Old blends perfectly with new in the spacious split-level open-plan, featuring jarrah door and window frames that match those in the front section of the house.

A plentitude of sparkling white cupboards and drawers in the generous kitchen are off-set by lovely oatmeal and brown-flecked granite tops.

Light floods the split-level family room courtesy of its many windows and huge sliding glass doors, which open onto the covered alfresco area.

Protected from the weather, an arch beautifully frames the sweeping lawn, swimming pool and a limestone terraced garden.

While at the front of the house, there is a lovely sculpted garden and a fairytale gabled roof.

The house is perfect for a family and includes a studio/games room, which would make the perfect teenage pad.

New balls, anyone?

The prestigious Alexander Park Tennis Court is only a two minute walk away, or if your dying for a game of golf after watching The Open, the Mt Lawley course is also close-by.

As are several private and pubic schools, shopping precincts and public transport options.
